The Culturalists

Sharjah is the third-largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates and is widely regarded as the cultural capital of the country. Under the vision and leadership of its ruler, H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Sharjah has flourished into a hub of art, culture, and education while preserving its rich Islamic heritage. Unlike the more cosmopolitan atmosphere of neighboring Dubai, Sharjah has a more conservative and family-friendly environment, as it is the only emirate where alcohol is completely banned.

History
  • Ancient roots: Sharjah has been a site of human settlement for over 5,000 years and was historically one of the wealthiest towns in the region.
  • Pearling and trade: The region’s economy was originally based on fishing, pearling, and agriculture. Following the arrival of the British in the 17th century, Sharjah became an important trading port.
  • Trucial State: As a Trucial State, Sharjah signed a treaty with Britain in 1820, making it a British protectorate.
  • Oil discovery and unification: In 1971, Sharjah became a founding member of the UAE. Following the discovery of oil in 1972, the emirate saw rapid development and modernization. 
 
Arts and culture
Sharjah’s cultural scene is a defining characteristic of the emirate. UNESCO recognized its dedication to the arts by naming it the “Cultural Capital of the Arab World” in 1998, and later the “World Book Capital” for 2019.

    • Sharjah International Book Fair: One of the most significant literary events in the region.

  • Architecture: The city is known for its elegant mosques and Islamic-inspired architecture, such as the Blue Souk (Central Souk).
